Roofings to triple output by 2011

Buoyed by growing demand for steal products from within the country as well as from across the east African region, Roofings limited - Uganda's leading steal manufacturers have set an ambitious target of tripling their current output in just 18 months.

Sikander Lalani, Roofings Chairman and Managing Director revealed this while at a blood donation and HIV/Aids counseling drive held at the company's ongoing new plant construction at Namanve industrial park.

According to Lalani, the plant, which is expected to be completed in August 2011 will produce more products compared to what they produce now and will employ 800 more workers - twice the number of people that are currently employed at the Lubowa-based factory.

Lalani told guests who had turned up at the Namanve plant to witness a social responsibility event that his company's ambition is to remain among the leading manufacturers of steel products in the great Lakes region as well as a top tax payer to the Ugandan government.

The rapid growth in the construction sector in both public and private arenas coupled with the opening up of borders in the East African community as well as Southern Sudan have created enormous opportunities that have made Roofings one of the most successful companies in Uganda.

The company already ranks among the biggest tax payers in Uganda with its annual contribution to government coffers of about Ushs 52 billion, according to the Roofings officials.

Phase one of the Namanve plant is expected to be completed by January 2010. To achieve their goals, Roofings plan to sink an estimated US $128 million in the entire project.

As a way of attracting the best workers, Lalani also noted that they intend to boost their workers' welfare through provision of attractive salaries and housing facilities.

Meanwhile, last weekend, the company in partnership with the Uganda Health Marketing Group (UHMG) organized a blood donation and free HIV counseling and testing exercise for its workers.

The event was officiated by former Vice President Dr. Specioza Wandira Kazibwe, and also witnessed by Wakiso LC 5 chairman Engineer Ian Kyeyune, Wakiso woman MP Rosemary Sseninde, Uganda Investment Authority Executive Director Dr Maggie Kigozi and Private Sector Foundation (PSFU) boss Gabriel Hatega.
