Insurance Commission goes for professionalism

With two training programmes held every year, the Uganda Insurance Commission is emphasizing professionalism among players in the industry and looks not prepared to give up on the engagement.

The consideration particularly becomes pertinent considering that the insuring public out there is becoming more and more aware about insurance products that it would be a shame if someone not conversant about the products he is selling, goes out to meet them.

In an on-going six weeks training to last from August 2 to September 11, 2010, about 290 agents or intermediaries including employees from the different insurance companies in the country are being fine tuned for the award of the internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in insurance, Paul Katabalwa, head of training at the Uganda Insurance Commission has revealed. COP is the basic training about the basics of insurance.

Katabalwa said that putting into consideration a 30 per cent failure rate among last year's trainees, the Commission at first thought of increasing the course duration to last two months but later opted to giving more emphasis to time utilization during the training. According to the timetable, the two hour a day training, is held from Monday to Saturday and covers three papers which include Fundamentals of Insurance (20 lessons and 40 classes); General Insurance (15 lessons and 30 classes); and Life and Pensions (15 lessons).

The training programme shows that intensive classes are conducted during the first five weeks and the sixth week is dedicated to private revision. The exams are scheduled to be held on September 15 and 16.

The importance the Commission attaches to this training is further buttressed by the fact that facilitators in the training are all insurance gurus. They include George Okotha (commissioner, technical, at the Insurance Commision); David Serunkuma (manager, Life, at UAP Insurance); Ronald Zaake (general manager, NICO Insurance); Saul Seremba (lecturer at Makerere Business School), Khisa Elvis and Nambafu Asiimwe.
