Kampala. Last Month, security operatives broke into the offices of a local NGO “Shadows of a Child” in Nakasongola District confiscating computers and private documents during an operation that was believed to have been sanctioned by the Internal Security Organisation a military arm of the state tasked with surveillance and intelligence. In a statement released by the Uganda Police following the incident. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said that, the police were merely carrying out investigations into what they called suspected subversive activities being carried out by the NGO.
Following the crack down at the offices of the NGO, the police are now hunting for child rights activist and one of the directors of Shadow of a Child Enoch Saaki. Family members of Enoch Saaki whose identities have been withheld for security reasons revealed that last night heavily armed security officers stormed the home of Mr. Saaki located in Seguku a Kampala Suburb demanding to know his.
Mr. Saaki who has been linked to the opposition pressure group “People Power” in the recent past was not present at his home at the time of the raid and the disgruntled security officers left in haste following the disappointment. According to family members, Saaki has been receiving threatening phone calls from authorities who claimed that he had been hiding behind the NGO to coordinate political activities on behalf of opposition leader and Kyadondo East Constituency MP Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine.
“They have been threatening him for a while and for now his life is in danger. We can’t reveal his address for now but he has run for his life” She explained.
In 2018, Mr. Saaki was arrested and briefly detained at a secure location as he returned from a business trip in the United States of America, Saaki at that time accused the security agencies of witch-hunting and persecuting him on matters he was unaware of. Last week, the activist spoke out against the attack on Shadows of a Child and threatened to take legal action against the perpetrators and was quoted to have said that “ Shadows of a Child is doing its best to improve the lives of vulnerable children and youths in Uganda and this act against us by the Security forces is shameful and will not go unanswered, we shall take them to court”
Human Rights lawyer Landislaus Rwakafuzi has gone on to condemn these acts calling them a clear violation of human rights. It now seems that dealing with people power is the new political death game in Uganda and not so long ago Bobi Wine claimed that whoever associates with him has become a target for kidnap, imprisonment, torture and death at the hands of the Uganda security forces.
