Is life so unfair that sometimes what we want to be is not what we become? Could there be some special power that dictates on what we should be even if it's against our wish?
Are we so short-sighted that we cannot choose the best route to take us to the destination of our dreams? Such questions can only come from the back of a perplexed mind but the most satisfactory answer to all that niggles at the back of our hearts is yes.
One of the most successful economics professors in the US once told journalists at a conference that as a young boy he wanted to become a lawyer, his father wanted him to become an engineer while the mother wanted a doctor out of her son.
He, however, became none of the three professionals. He became an economist because that's what God wanted him to be. He went ahead to confess that what he became is what himself, his mother and his father also wanted though they all didn't know.
God's option emerged the best and his family together with his country are proud of him and his contributions to the world as an economist. On countless times I have said that God makes no mistakes and if He has ever made one it was a calculated mistake.
A colleague was once lamenting for having become a teacher. For sure in him there wasn't any scintilla of interest in the profession. Having failed to raise the entry points to a medical school he took up education as the next option.
The fact is that he wanted to become a doctor but he became a desperate teacher. Am only about to ask whether or not being a teacher is the biggest curse one can ever get on earth.
May be any profession can be a curse depending on who gets it. Frankly speaking I know of many bright people who chose to become teachers and deliberately declined to become doctors and lawyers.
My own understanding of the teaching profession can only be summed up in an analogy. First of all it is a special calling that only the privileged few can ever get. A teacher is like a candle that consumes itself in order to give light to others.
If that's not patriotism of the highest order then I will call president Museveni to let me know what it is. For heavens sake, this is self-sacrifice and a humanitarian act that can only be rewarded by God.
And one other thing I know about a candle is that when it is extinguished there is darkness, which is a biblical expression of ignorance and evil. Becoming a teacher could mean taking up the right sword to fight ignorance and illiteracy in mankind.
The bitter truth about visions and ambitions is that sometimes they become elusive assets that cannot easily be achieved. Fine we have missed the 'best catch' but the question is what next? I think if we cannot get what we want then it is logical to love what we have.
Trying to find the positive out of every thing is a special talent that will never leave you desperate for the rest of your life. You can make life a positive thing and get everlasting happiness. Try it now.
