Did Jesus have a Mercedes Benz? A tale of lifts
Have you realized that some questions come suddenly and spark off imaginations to your surprise? I have heard two questions from children that forced me to take a sizeable chunk of my time pondering over them.
One child asked me to tell him the type of car Jesus Christ used to drive. You and I know that it wasn't a Hammer, Mercedes Benz, Range Rover or Bobi Wine's Escalade. The bitter truth is that Christ didn't have a car; not even a bicycle. Now my biggest worry is disclosing this sad news especially to a kid who had a lot of respect for Jesus. But can someone explain why the king of kings chose not to cruise himself?
Another child asked his eighty five year old grandfather if he also entered Noah's Ark. When the old man said he didn't the child consequently wondered why his grandfather didn't die.
In his Sunday school the boy had been told that those who didn't enter Noah's Ark perished due to floods; and surprisingly his grandfather survived.
In his own understanding someone as old as his grandfather must have been present during Noah's time.
Let us say ancient people didn't have the technology to develop means of transport like ones we have today. They used horses, chariots and water vessels but no cars.
Obviously there were no driving schools to teach them how to drive. Now almost every one is a driver. You know somebody complimented me on my driving yesterday. They left a note on the wind screen and it said "Parking fine"
The distinction between people who have cars and those who don't have is that the later ask for lifts and the former give lifts. Most people would prefer lifts to using public transport or walk.
Actually traveling in a private vehicle is seen as convenient, fast as well as a sign of prestige or show off to some people especially the youths. It is a common practice among the youths to buy cars before anything else including putting up a house. May be this explains why night-parkings have become a lucrative business today.
Most people who love to be given lifts are women since their counterparts are always more than willing to help the mothers of this nation. The teenagers also have that interminable love for offers and lifts so that they can save money for alternative uses.
But children should not accept lifts off someone without their parents' permission. Parents have faced the peril of losing their children to car accidents whenever they are given lifts by their peers especially during holidays.
Offers such as free lunch, free entrance to a recreational place and lifts are good baits for kidnappers and other criminals like rapists. Sometimes accepting such offers is choosing to become the sacrificial lamb to be put at the altar of the devil. May be we can ask for lifts but only from people we know and be careful if someone takes the first step to offer the lift.
If you thought lifts would make you travel like the princess of Wales, think again. You have not been given a lift at the back of a pickup. It may be okay outside the city but at least not within the city.
If Pickups are meant to carry luggage at the back this time you are the luggage. Just thank God that traffic lights don't stop you at busy junctions like Clock Tower, Wandegeya, Jinja Road or Nakawa. And if the pick up comes to a halt at such junctions pray harder that your OBs and OGs don't see you. Continue praying to God that those who see you don't wave at you.
