Share

As the Busoga chiefs struggle to reach consensus on who should be the next Kyabazinga, one of their daughters has declared her intentions to join the 9th Parliament.
Princess Namuganza Persis Nkono of the Bukono chiefdom in Namutumba district says she has made a strong foundation that will see her replace the national female youth Member of Parliament Mariam Nalubega.

Princess Namuganza had set her eyes on the Eastern Youth MP position, but she later changed her mind to settle for the national female youth MP.

Motivation

Soft-spoken Namuganza says she was motivated to join active politics so as to become a voice of the youth hence the slogan of her campaign - Voice of the Youth.
Namuganza claims that many politicians simply use young people as stepping stones and after they've helped someone into power, they are dumped.

Profile
Namuganza is currently a youth councilor in Namutumba district but she's also an acclaimed small scale entrepreneur.

Namuganza enters the race for National Youth MP where five strong women. These include Allen Mirembe a councilor and secretary of education in Nakaseke district. The race also has Dr Isabella Apio, a physician working with Soroti Hospital. Monica Amoding and Peace Rukundo who work with Uganda Women Parliamentarian Association, UWOPA and State House respectively are also expected to Namuganza a tough fight.

The sixth contestant, the Deborah Asasira for the female youth leader is a former guild president of Nkumba University.
Being the only candidate from Busoga vying for female youth MP's seat, Namuganza has gained a lot of support from key politicians hailing from the region.

Past youth reps

Nusura Tiperu who represented the female youth in the 6th Parliament hails from Northern Uganda. Juliet Kabonesa SSsekitoleko succeeded Tiperu in the 7th parliament and comes from western Uganda.

The current occupant of the seat, Miriam Nalubega, comes from the central region. If regional balance is anything that electors consider, it means that eastern Uganda, which hasn't had a representative could have it this time round.

Moreover, when one factors in other political considerations such as the eastern youth MP seat, some trade offs could be made for Busoga youth to vote for someone from Teso so that their daughter can be voted for the National Female Youth MP.
