Minister warns on HIV spread

Share
Basing on latest research findings from several governmental agencies that show a marked increase in new cases of HIV/Aids infections in Uganda, the minister of health in charge of general duties has appealed to Ugandans to check reckless sexual behavior which is said to be behind the new upsurge.

Dr. Richard Nduhura appealed to Ugandans especially the young people to stop engaging risky sexual behaviors so as to escape the dangerous spread of HIV/Aids.
"We have found out that the new HIV infections in Uganda have increased largely because people engage in more risky sexual behaviors," Nduhura said as he pointed out further that researchers have found new virus strains in Uganda that are resistant to Anti-Retroviral Therapies - which are known to provide relief to Aids patients.

The minister made the warning as he once again urged Ugandans to embrace safe male circumcision as one of the latest supplementary measures to the ABC that have been adopted to try to stem the rapid spread of the virus in the country.

According to the research by the World Health Organization [WHO] uncircumcised men are about eight times more at risk of contracting HIV compared to their circumcised counterparts.

The government's plan to circumcise nearly 3 quarters of sexually active men in Uganda aged 14-55 who are still uncircumcised however faces some challenges such as fear as well as religious beliefs that circumcision would lead some to convert to Islam.
