Another Muslim leader gunned down in Kampala

The Muslim fraternity in Uganda is in shock following the second assassination of another top cleric in less than a week.

Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga died Sunday evening at Bwebajja mosque along Entebbe road, remain a mystery but some suspect that people who were behind the sale of William Street Mosque might have masterminded his death.

Bahiga’s death comes just four days since anotehr senior cleric the late Sheikh Dr Abdul Qadr Muwaya; the Leader of the Shiite sect was gunned down at his home in Mayuge district on Christmas evening.

The duo’s death also follows the assassination of top muslim leaders in Kampala in 2012. Sheikh Abdul Karim Ssentamu, with who Bahiga opposed the sale of William Street Mosque, was assassinated. Hajj Abubaker Kiweewa was also gunned down by unknown people in the same year.

Before his death, Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga had been appointed as the Amir of Kampala district by the William Street Tabliq faction after the sect removed Sheikh Muhamad Yunus Kamoga.

While attending the burial of Sheikh Muwaya in Mayuge, the Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura promised to investigate the murders of top Muslim leaders. He noted however that previous murders were linked to the Allied Defence Forces (ADF).

However, many Muslims remain doubtful of the Police’s story line arguing that they cannot see why ADF would kill ‘innocent’ people.
