Museveni ends impasse as he names new Chief Justice

New Chief Justice Bart Katureebe

President Yoweri Museveni has ended a two-year long impase with the judiciary arm of government over his reluctance to appoint a new Chief Justice.

Museveni today appointed Justice Bart Magunda Katureebe as the new Chief Justice, but also one of the three persons whose names were submitted to President Museveni to choose from by the Judicial Service Commission, to chose from as CJ.

Museveni apparently had initially rejected the three nominees including Katureebe and instead preferred to keep Justice Steven Kavima in acting position of Chief Justice for two years. This created unease within the legal fraternity and some lawyers threatened to protest the delay as politically driven.

The President has also appointed Justice Steven Kavuma as the Deputy Chief Justice.

Justice Katureebe, 64 has been Justice of the Supreme Court and previously worked as the Attorney General.
