Climate change Commissioner Chebet Maikut dies after short illness

Climate Change guru passes on


Chebet Maikut, who has been the commissioner for Climate Change in the Ministry of Water and Environment passed away early today after a short illness. Officials in the Ministry of Water told The Sunrise the cause of Maikut’s death was still being investigated.

Maikut held many distinguished positions of public service starting as a Member of the Constituent Assembly, President of the Uganda National Farmers Federation, (UNFFE).

By the time of his death, Maikut was serving as the chairperson of the Board of Uganda National Adaptation Fund, a local chapter for the International United Nations Adaptation Fund.

He was also the National Focal Point Person for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ( UNFCCC).

UNDP through its twitter feed, eulogized Maikut for his contribution towards connecting the global community in climate negotiations.

UNDP said: “We @UNDPUganda are deeply saddened by the abrupt passing of Mr. Chebet Maikut Commissioner Climate Change Dep’t. He has been a gallant champion against climate change & was one of the speakers at tomorrow’s Dialogue on Climate Action.”
