UWA boss Mapesa runs to court

Suspended Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) boss, Moses Mapesa has run to court to have his removal rescinded.

Mapesa is joined by UWA's Head of Corporate Services, Aphophia Natukunda, to challenge their suspension.

They were shown the exit by UWA's Board Bhairman, Dr. Boysier Oumar Muballe.

This followed reports that the duo failed to rein in an official who asked for a kickback from an investor, in return for a licence to engage in sport hunting.

UWA's Conservation Coordinator, James Omoding was named as the official who asked for Ushs6m bribe from Prince Albrecht Oettingen and Christian Weth.

The inducement was reportedly to have UWA grant the investors sport hunting rights in Pian Upe, Amudat and Madi reserves.

Mapesa, who has headed UWA for five years, has filed a writ at the High Court, seeking the quashing of his suspension and eventual reinstatement.

He grounds his need for reinstatement, among other reasons, on the fact that he was not given a right to be heard, before Muballe swung the axe.

This, he argues, is a transgression on his natural right to be heard, before he was condemned.

He sues the Attorney General and Dr. Muballe, saying they had no legal basis to send him home.

The Attorney General and Muballe have 15 days to respond to Mapesa's accusations.
