Youth told to join army to defend Uganda

In the wake of the bomb blasts that rocked Kampala on July 11, police Chief Major General Kale Kayihura has called on the country's youth to join security forces to be able to defend themselves against lawless characters like the suicide bombers.

The July 11 bombings which were masterminded by Somali militants of al-shabaab left at least 76 people dead and 94 injured with an additional 37 still bed ridden.

The major general cited the fact that since majority of the deceased bomb victims were young people, to argue that the youth should realize they have a bigger stake in their own security as well as that of the entire country. He therefore urged Uganda's young people to take up the lead in efforts to secure Uganda especially against terrorists.

Criminal elements, he noted, like to target entertainment places like the Kyadondo Rugby Club and football stadia where a majority of the youth hang out for their leisure time.
Despite these developments, some senior members of the leading opposition parties have poured blame onĀ  the police and the army accusing them of fueling violence in the country.

They say that Kayihura shouldn't urge the youth to join the army because, in a way, this promotes an increase in violence in the country. They add that instead, the youth should be encouraged to engage in productive work like business and not to seek skills of killing people.
