Museveni woos Baluuli with anti-Mengo rhetoric

Share
BUGANDA:

During his recently concluded “Bonna Bagaggawale” tour of Nakasongola district, President Museveni’s appealed to ethnic sensibilities of the people of Baluuli – one of Buganda’s sub-counties, as he touted his advantages over his political adversaries’.

The president accused Buganda kingdom officials – whom he regularly refers to as ‘Mengo’ for buttressing the culture of the Baluuli people who inhabit the greater part of the district.

“Your language is a great asset that you must preserve. That is why I told Mengo, if you want your own culture, why don’t you want other people to enjoy their culture? That is being selfish.” Museveni added:

Obote tried to destabilise Buganda, I fought him and removed him because he wanted to destroy the Buganda culture. It is the same Baganda now who want to destroy the culture of Baruli and the Banyala. I don’t want to hear that language. It is God who made the Baruli, not Mengo and not Museveni,” he said.

Mengo officials however reject the claim that they ever attempted to suppress the culture of any ethnic group in Uganda including that of the Baluuli. Instead they accuse President Museveni of propagating and fermenting divisions with in Buganda.

They point to the government’s well known sponsored plans to create a new kingdom of Buluuli within Buganda, something they say is an orchestrated plan to weaken Buganda by creating enmity among its people.

Bonna Bagaggawale tour

While the president toured some of the prosperous business enterprises in Nakasongola, the district remains a hot spot of poverty with more than half of the people in the district living in abject poverty (less than a dollar a day), according to the latest poverty assessment report carried out by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics.

Majority of the people in the largely rural district rely on cattle keeping for income generation, and most parts do not have access to grid electricity.

It is evident though that while the President has embarked on a country-wide tour to assess Bonna Bagaggawale projects implemented by NAADS, he’s using the same projects to campaign ahead of the 2011 elections.

Museveni touted his government’s preparedness to extend development infrastructure projects such as water, power and roads to the district which must be taken advantage of by the people to start economic activities to boost their own incomes.

Urges jobless youth to join army

On reports that the district is experiencing rising levels of unemployment, President Museveni urged the youth to join the army and form SACCOs which can helped create employment opportunities for young people.
