AFLI exposes non-performing MPs
The African Leadership Institute (AFLI) released the third parliamentary score card since 2007 which indicated that Prof. Gilbert Bukenya, Busiro North MP, attended only two of the total 96 sittings of the house while Gen. David Tinyefunza, Brig. Francis Okello and Col. Ramadhan Kyamulesire, all army MPs did not attend a single sitting.
Star performers included among others; Denis Hamson Obua, Peter Mutuluuza, and Dr. Chris Baryomunsi.
The score card measured MPs on performance in plenary and committees, as well as programmes executed in their constituencies.
DPP Okays charges against Otunnu
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Richard Butera, sanctioned prosecution charges of promotion of sectarianism against UPC leader Olara Otunnu.
The submission of the case file by the DPP came after Otunnu declined to record a statement at CID over comments he allegedly made on Radio Lango that the two decade war in northern Uganda was facilitated by President Museveni and his government.
Otunnu said he would not retract his statements because he had overwhelming evidence and was ready to tell Ugandans the truth.
Police arrest 80 0ver anti-EC demos
At least 80 opposition demonstrators were arrested by police after they tried to stage country-wide demonstrations for a credible 2011 ballot.
The demonstrations that were organized by Forum for Democratic and the National Alliance for Free and Fair Elections (NAFFE) were meant to let the delegates at the African Union summit in Munyonyo attend to the challenges of democracy in Uganda.
Tullow buys out Heritage oil
Tullow Uganda, bought the assets of Heritage Oil and Gas Company in two oil blocks in Western Uganda despite a pending tax dispute with the government.
Heritage Oil announced that Tullow had paid $1.45 billion (about Sh3.3 trillion) for its 50 per cent interest in block 1 and 3A, which they co-owned.
Heritage Oil however said it had received only $1.045 billion (about sh 2.3 million) while $405 million (sh 911 billion) was to be held by the government temporarily in view of a pending tax dispute between Heritage and Uganda Revenue Authority.
AU summit ends amid Ghadaffi theatrics
The African Union Summit that attracted 35 African leaders along the theme; maternal, infant, child health development, ended on a dramatic note where Libyan Flamboyant leader Col.Ghadaffi slapped his aide in public for taking him to a wrong venue of the meeting.
The summit which started 19th and ended 27th July, 2010, was over shadowed by among other debates; terrorist attacks on Uganda, the Somalia question and financing infrastructure projects in Africa.
Education ministry cuts school term
The Ministry of Education and Sports directed all schools in the county to close on August 6 instead of August 13 as stated in the national school calendar.
The directive also brought forward the reporting date for third term to August 23, instead of September 6 and close on December 3.
Francis Rubanga, the Permanent Secretary in the Education ministry said the move would provide two weeks of remedial work in preparation for final written and practical examinations.
Tycoon Kirumira's grandson recovered
The Police anti terror unit recovered four-year-old King Lubowa, son to Engineer Patrick and Beatrice Kirumira Lubowa of Muyenga, a Kampala suburb.
Lubowa, a grandson to Kampala tycoon Godfrey Kirumira, was kidnapped for a ransom of shs200 million that was communicated on a note left in a microwave.
After an Information Communication Technology (ICT) facilitated search, Lubowa was rescued from a Muzigo in Makindye Lukuli-Nanganda zone where the suspects were hiding.
Makerere ups entry points
Makerere University raised the entry points for most private admissions in the August 2010-2011 academic year.
Although the cut-off points went up by 1-3 points compared to last year's, some course's cut-offs were lowered.
Law (Day) rose from 53.4 to 53.7 points, Mass Communications (Day) went up from 47.6 to 50.5 and Civil Engineering from 42.9 to 45.8, among other notable courses.
