Otunnu unveils UPC blue print

Upon the successful ousting of the Milton Obote dynasty, Ambassador Fred Otunnu UPC president general outlined his vision for the party as well as a number of booster strategies.

The party President said that he will spearhead a campaign to expose Museveni's "lies" to the international community among new strategies aimed at wrestling power from the ruling NRM.

Otunnu promised to reconcile the party with Buganda Kingdom saying that it was important for the relationship between Buganda and UPC to be fixed in a bid to foster national development.

Temangalo scam protagonists fight over Bank

Security Minister Amama Mbabazi and his confidants, Ruhakana Rugunda and Amos Nzei were accused by other share holders of the National Bank of Commerce of using the insider information to acquire a majority shareholding in the bank.

The aggrieved group assisted by top lawyers in town, demanded for an extra-ordinary general meeting to be called to remedy the situation.

The point of contention is the trio of Mbabazi, Nzeyi and Rugunda owning 86 per cent shares and collectively enjoying about 99 per cent of effective voting rights, dividend rights and capital redemption rights in the company.

Bottles in Bars empty by 10:00pm
The revelation by State Minister for industry and technology, Simon Lokodo that the proposed-amended Enguli [liquor] Act will ban opening of bars before 5:00pm during the day and closing of business at 10:00pm, sent shock waves to bar operators around the country.

Though the Minister clarified that up-country drinking joints that would like to conduct business beyond 8:00pm and 10:00pm for urban areas will have an option of going to hotels, his clarification fell on deaf ears as in a related development, bar owners in Kampala opposed the proposed bill describing the proposals as "draconian".

The bill provides for withdrawal of licenses for those caught selling alcohol beyond the stipulated time.

Draft Media Bill swatted

The media fraternity, human rights activists and legislators called the proposed Press and Journalists [Amendment] Bill, 2010 unconstitutional as they argued that the state was plotting to muzzle the freedom of the press. Activists said that the proposals are draconian, uncalled for and by far contravene the principles of democracy and rule of law.

The Bill which seeks to empower the media council to control the licensing of news papers with a provision to renew their licenses annually, is also aimed at barring the press from publishing materials that are prejudicial to national security, stability and unity or any matters injurious to Uganda's relations with its neighbours and friends.

MUK students protest over shot colleagues

Makerere University students mainly from Kenya rioted following the death of their colleagues; Ignatius Nyongesa, 24 a third-year student of commerce and Brian Amoga, 21 a first-year student of law, both Kenyans shot by a private security guard, Richard Hafasha at God is Able Hostel situated in Makerere Kikoni.

Disagreements between supporters of a Kenyan guild presidential candidate, John Kamau. and NRM candidate, John Teira sealed the fate of the deceased. The fracas ensued after the duo had campaigned at a rally at Nsibirwa Hall in the university's main campus.

Teira's group had camped at God is Abel Hostel for hours but as they prepared to leave, they were confronted by Nyongesa, believed to belong to Kamau's camp hit Teira with a bench when Teira's group hesitated to leave the hostel.

Buganda's royal Tombs burnt to ash

The world famous Kasubi Tombs were reduced to ash by fire whose origins are still unknown.

Inability of the police fire brigade to stop the fire from spreading led to the far reaching damage to the tombs. Police was unable to access the heritage as the surging crowd disrupted their efforts to put out the fire. The crowd wailed in disbelief as the tombs were burnt to ash.

Three police fire brigade trucks were damaged and a fire fighter was injured by the rioters. Details about the cause of the fire and extent of the damage were scanty.
