Nambooze, Bakaluba for Mukono seat

Ms. Betty Nambooze of the Democratic Party exhibited political might over her ruling NRM Party nemesis, Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa at their nomination, when she stormed Mukono town with Dozens of supporters perched on cars and boda bodas amid heavy police deployment.

She was escorted by top opposition politicians and nominated ahead of Peter Bakaluba Mukasa. The two were successfully nominated by Francis Nkurunziza, the returning officer.

Police blamed for failing Kajubi's case

Senior Kampala advocates blamed Police investigators and prosecution for the botched up case against Kato Kajubi who was acquitted of ritual murder. Justice Moses Mukiibi of the High Court ordered his release, saying the principal witnesses had lied and were, therefore, unreliable.

 The witnesses, Umar Kateregga and his wife Mariam Nabukeera, had been jointly charged with Kajubi, but the prosecutor decided to make them witnesses as a means of getting evidence against Kajubi.

500,000 spear head Umeme litigation 

The High Court permitted some 50,000 electricity consumers to sue Umeme Limited, over alleged wrong power billing and use of defective meters. The main complainants in the case are; Joseph Kasozi, Paul Kazinda Kasozi, Marcellinus Idumu and Ismail Dabule.  The petitioners sought a court declaration that Umeme over-charged its clients by inflating monthly electricity bills and using faulty meters.

 The suit followed findings by an adhoc government team, headed by Gen.Salim Saleh, which reported that Umeme was charging its clients exorbitantly and recommended an immediate reduction on the electricity tariffs.

Rival DP Meeting halted

The High Court blocked the delegates conference of the rival faction of the DP led by Prof.Joseph Mukiibi.This was done to allow the two sides to provide evidence to the High Court.

 The order stopped Mukiibi from holding a delegates conference, issuing statements on behalf of the party and acting as its National Executive Committee boss. The break away faction was set to hold their delegates conference at Namboole Stadium in Kampala, in the course of the week.

Suruma joins US think tank

Former finance minister Ezra Suruma joined Brookings, a US- based research think tank, as a distinguished visiting fellow.

 Suruma was set to join the Africa Growth Initiative, part of the Global Economy and Development programme, where he would deal with governance in African political and financial institutions and their impact on stability and economic growth.

Father witnesses Daughter's rape

Thugs broke into the house of Mr. Mubiru, a business man in Nansana and rapped his daughter as he watched the gruesome act.

 After the first turn of the rape, the thugs ordered her to carry the loot which they had picked from the house and on reaching a nearby Banana plantation, they again rapped her.Mr. Mubiru the father to the rapped girl said that the thugs directed a machete at his neck and ordered him to be silent throughout their operation.

Two men jailed for making guns

The army in Moroto District jailed two Karimojong men for illegally making guns. The two were also accused of abetting cattle rustling because the guns were used by warriors to steel cattle.

 Marko Lomer of Iriri Sub-county was handed six years in jail while Moru Atuki of Matany Sub-county was to spend three years behind bars.
