Mabikke's SDP joins Inter-Party Cooperation

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) joined the Inter-party Cooperation raising the number of parties in the coalition to five.

SDP boss Mike Mabikke said the coalition boosts the opposition's chances of taking power and forming the next government.

At the same ceremony Police was attacked over the creation of a 'Kiboko squad' that beat up FDC leader Dr. Kiiza Besigye and other opposition leaders in Kampala recently.

EC backs down on voter registration

The Electoral Commission revised its earlier schedule to end voter registration on June 4, and extended the registration to 19th June, 2010.

As of June 16, 2, 3450,410 million new voters had been registered reflecting a deficit on the commission's target of 3.5 million voters to add to the 10.5 million already registered. EC chief, Badru Kiggundu urged Ugandans to learn to be responsive when called for a national cause.

Deadly weed terrorises 12 districts

A killer weed invaded Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda, endangering thousands of animals, human beings and plants.

Busiu on the Tororo-Mbale highway, Busia boarder town, Karengare in Kabale district, Mbarara town, Bugembe town council in Jinja, Ibanda, Namutumba on Tirinyi road, Busesa in Iganga district and Namalemba in Bugiri district were among other affected areas.

Assailant invades MP Nabilah Nagayi

Kampala Women Member of Parliament, Nabilah Sempala Nagayi, was attacked by an unidentified man at her Bauman House offices adjacent to the Parliament House.

While narrating her ordeal, Nagayi said that the man shouted: "You have handled the issue of markets badly. You don't want development. We are tired of you."

She ordered the assailant out of her office in vain. She raised Police but they did not answer her call. The man finally left with no attention from Police at the dismay of Nagayi and other MPs.

Bhart seals Zain takeover deal

Bharti Airtel completed the acquisition of Zain mobile operations in 15 countries, taking a giant step to becoming the world's largest telecommunication operator.

The enterprise valued at $10.7 billion would make Bharti Airtel a global brand covering over 1.8 billion people.

The implications of the take over on Zain Uganda's operations were likely to be made clear at a press conference that was to be held by Bharti executives in Kampala.

Education ministry fail to utilise 16b

The Education ministry was set to return close to Sh16 billion to the Consolidated Fund after failing to utilise it in the last financial year.

Dr Daniel Nkaada, the commissioner for Basic Education, said the money had been earmarked for the recruitment of about 7,000 teachers in rural districts.

The ministry was returning the money because some districts failed to recruit teachers and those who did so, the teachers quit after being confirmed.

Six eye NSSF top job

Simon Rutega, the Chief Executive Officer of  the Uganda Securities Exchange, Dr Julius Kakuru, the former deputy principle Makerere University Business School, Francis Byaruhanga, formerly the Executive Director of the Road Agency Formation Unit (RAFU), James Arinaitwe, the Managing Director Posta Uganda, Richard Byarugaba, Global Trust Bank Managing Director and the NSSF acting Managing Director, Grace Isabirye were interviewed by the National Social Security Fund Board to fill the vacant post of Managing Director.

Nyakairima warns opposition

The Chief of Defence Forces, General Aronda Nyakairima, warned opposition politicians against resorting to violence to settle political differences.

Aronda said the country was on the path of development and had no time for violence. He highlighted that there were established constitutional avenues for resolving political disputes.
