No answers; still shocked. But why soccer fans?
Perhaps my answer will come from a self designed query and without scratching the head I will respond, I am shocked.
Reason, I was seated in the middle of the crowed at Kyadondo, giving tips and at the same time making my opinion on which coach got the players' selections right; which country (Spain and Netherlands) would win the prestigious world soccer trophy.
From the look of things I had already addressed myself that Spain was winning the match though I sympathized with Holland, but still went on to talk about the positives and negatives of both teams lest people doubt my journalism ethics if I dare took sides.
Indeed Spain won but I did not witness that moment and therefore I still miss the World Cup for not experiencing the winning moment.
I will hate that moment forever in my life.
Just before I told my right side neighbor that we were most likely going see the game through to the extra time, two bomb blasts treated us to a shocker that left the guy in the next seat dead on spot and the one next to him his head sliced off.
This is the closest I ever witnessed my death coming. As you read this, could you have remained yourself in that situation?
Already the death toll stands at over seventy. I would be dead now. Maybe…!
Well, the bomb blast is but not my interest in this article. It's rather about the poor security or lack of it at all at such social gatherings like night clubs, stadia, courts and born again crusades.
Its here where people turn-up in their thousands to socialize. Particularly, I must, with authority comment on how at all stadia there is no security.
Security concerns is some fact that everybody takes for granted even the personnel that are supposed to provide it. The only time you see strict security is when politicians in high ranking offices come around to watch a match or not watching but presiding over at an event as guests of honors.
Another observation is, like one artist said "Tumala kwe koona netujukira okubuuka" surely suits perfectly in our means within our community.
Last Monday hours after the Sunday midnight explosions, security was tight at Hotel gates, Ministries and other offices a true reflection of 'Tumala Kwe koona'
I am deeply sad that the innocent people are dead while others survived severe and life threatening injuries.
I am sure some one could be reading this and blaming those that turned up for that World Cup final screening but it was not about just watching, it was rather about making history for the fact it was the first of its kind World Cup on the black African continent in history.
Like fat has it, the same love for soccer killed the fans. Their outings that commenced with watching football at Kyadondo ended many in Mulago mortuary dead and on sick hospital beds seriously injured.
The love for telling people about sports in my 'Eyes on sports' column almost killed me. My colleague Henry Mulindwa almost died in the same spirit. But we now take up the name "Bomb survivors"
