Did USPA really think it through?
As we all know, it was meant to be the perfect search for the champion-one who had done a lot for sport preferably on the international and local scene.
Members voting against a world-class star for a local achiever at the 2009 UTL/USPA Personality of the Year award left many with big unanswered questions.
Heathens' choice last Saturday, against Asiku the World Boxing Champion, Moses Kipsiro- World Cross-country Silver medalist not forgetting Brian Umony was a very wrong choice.
I for one, the choice indeed worked a big blow to the prior background of the event.
Honestly members, we have acted against our strict norms and now USPA is like the sports bar, the place where fan-journalists create and critique high-quality sports analysis not with the sense of appreciativeness.
The mood that ensued, in the whole hall of the event after the declaration of the winner was evident.
Visibly unhappy after Asiku got knocked out of the USPA list of Champions at the first knockout stage, Juuko rushed through the big audience looking for yours truly.
As he searched, I was doing rounds through the same audience searching for him for a comment?
Juuko starts: "Tell me brother, what you have done today, is to me very disappointing ”.
For him, the dream of Asiku rising high above Heathens, Umony and Kipsiro and achieving critical acclaim has not become the reality he thought it would.
Compare that to the current success Asiku appears to be having, and one surely must wonder - did USPA really think through to Vote for MTN Heathens?
Yes, we left a winner. No, come on it was time to move on and vote the winner. Time will tell as it's one of those moments we have to vote.
And for MTN Heathens, it can appear worse when you look at what the country achieved in the last four years they have been playing, and what Asiku has achieved in the same period for the country.
Heathens won three major titles-the Uganda Cup, the national league, the Hima tens (10's) and the rest of the other titles were minors last year but very few Ugandans can remember this because they even know less who Heathens are; if not from the rugby fraternity then they are national champions anyway. No doubt!
Asiku won several fights. Yes, many have been national titles in Sweden where he is based, but he is a World feather-weight Champion. World boxing Champion? And this is pride to Uganda.
Therefore, after analyzing Asiku performances and Heathens and what it means for the country, it makes one wonder why USPA chose to vote against Asiku. Or even Kipsiro and Umony?
The fame and prestige that comes with Asiku's belts to Uganda could have probably been considerable factors in the voting decision.
But for an association that prides and commands itself in honesty and impartiality, why would its members not have done exactly what it's (USPA) values (objectivity and integrity) demand?
Then again, it's not a problem for Heathens to be crowned. They gratefully championed a winning stint last season in rugby, but what about our sponsor. If you are a USPA member reading this, you know what I am talking about.
Sincerely, the night's achiever was someone else not MTN Heathens and we demand we deserve some sense of objectivity next time we vote for the same……! Thank you.
