Electoral Commision set for residual elections

The Electoral Commission has released a programme for the conduct of residual elections including elections of representatives of professional associations in the Kampala Capital City Council (KCCA) as well as for other local councils in 109 districts across the country.

EC chairman Eng. Badru Kigundu said: “The nomination of candidates for vacant posts at sub-county and district headquarters are to be held on May 9, campaigns, poling day for professional bodies in KCCA will be held on May 11, 2016.”

Kiggundu said that on May 17, EC will hold polls for regional representative of older persons to local governments before the electoral body brings the current electoral cycle is brought to the close on May 31, 2016.

EC faces 108 court petitions

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has revealed that is facing a huge legal battle arising from the 109 cases that were brought against it by losing political contenders. Besides the Supreme Court decision that was brought against President Museveni and EC and was subsequently dismissed, EC has a steep climb to overcome those cases.

In view of highly critical reports by international observer missions in the recently held elections, Kiggundu said: “EC will consider recommendations with a view of improving our operations efficiency in advancing democracy and good governance in this country.”
