10 month baby survives storm that kills 4 on L. Victoria

Most people endure high risks while traveling on lake victoria because they do not wear life jackets

A 10 month old baby is one the four people that survived an afternoon storm on lake Victoria near Buvuma Island.

The storm killed four male adults who were part of 8 passengers who were traveling from Mayuge District to Buvuma to participate in a day market there, Uganda Police has revealed.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SPC) and the Police Spokesperson of Ssezibwa region Lameka Kigozi identified the dead as: 1. Magala Ivan, aged 27yrs, 2. Tenywa Noah, aged 24yrs Resident of Kitovu village Imaniro sub-county, Mayuge district, 3. Waiswa Matia aged 21yrs also from Kitovu and another one identified only as Peter.

SPC Kigozi identified the 10 month baby survivor as Onyango Joseph. Two other female passengers Awori Annet, aged 24yrs and Athieno Rosemary aged 16yrs, also survived. Another male, Othieno Ojame, 30yrs also survived the accident. The traders were traveling aboard an engine-powered boat when the storm struck.

Kigozi blamed the deaths on lack of life jackets by the passengers. It is not clear for now why the baby or the women as well as Othieno managed to escape the accident.

The police, had by the time of reporting, recovered three bodies and were still searching for Peter’s body.
