Fire which gutted the St Bernard Manya SSS

The administration of St. Bernard Secondary School, Manya has come into sharp scrutiny following the deadly inferno that claimed 11 teenage boys on Sunday night.

Although the school leadership claims pushed the cause of the fire to the suspected S.4 students, members of the public and security agencies have deflected blame to the school management for possible negligence.

Some media outlets have quoted Southern Region Fire Brigade officer Hillery Tuyambaze as saying that they warned the school management about the security risks of the burnt dormitory.

Tuyambaze said his department inspected the dormitories and told management to remove buglar proofing from windows, install new fire extinguishers and CCTV cameras but all in vain.

According to Police, the arsonist first locked the dormitory’s main door with two big padlocks, poured fuel inside the building and set it on fire.

The torched boys dormitory had over 60 students from S.3. Delays in accessing the locked building by rescuers is blamed for the high rate of causalities.

The students who lost their lives in the inferno were:

1) Charles Ssuuna

2) Sam Nsubuga

3) Tomity Bukenya

4) Geoffrey Lutaaya

5) Remegious Tamale

6) Antonio Ssekitende

7) Hudson Byamukama

8) Emmanuel Kasozi

9) Sharif Dodiye

10) Maurice Basiita

and left several others nursing serious wounds!
