A Uganda Airlines flight traveling from Johannesburg (JNB) to Entebbe (EBB) was forced to return shortly after takeoff on the morning of April 3, 2026, following a bird strike that caused significant damage to the aircraft’s windscreen.
According to an official statement from the airline, the incident occurred approximately 45 minutes into the flight when the aircraft encountered a bird strike. The impact resulted in a shattered windscreen, prompting the flight crew to take immediate precautionary measures.
The pilots made the decision to turn the aircraft around and return to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg as a safety precaution. The plane landed safely without any further complications, demonstrating adherence to established aviation safety procedures.
Uganda Airlines confirmed that all passengers and crew onboard were safe and unharmed. The airline emphasized that the safety and security of its passengers and staff remain its highest priority.
Bird strikes are a recognized risk in aviation and can occur during different phases of flight. Aircraft are built with safety redundancies to handle such situations, and crews are trained to respond swiftly and effectively to ensure passenger safety.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no injuries were reported. The airline is expected to assist affected passengers with alternative travel arrangements following the disruption.
