Mobile money services across Uganda have been fully restored days after the country’s general elections, following a temporary suspension that affected digital financial transactions nationwide.
Telecommunications companies including MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda have confirmed to their customers that all mobile money services including deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and merchant payments, are now fully restored. Subscribers received notifications indicating that the platforms had resumed full operations and are functioning normally.
The suspension of mobile money services occurred in the days leading up to the elections, alongside restrictions on internet access. Authorities stated at the time that the measures were part of broader security precautions implemented during the sensitive electoral period.
During the temporary disruption, businesses and individuals across the country experienced difficulties conducting routine financial transactions. Mobile money plays a critical role in Uganda’s economy, particularly for small businesses, transport operators, market vendors, and households that rely on cashless payments and digital transfers for daily activities. The outage temporarily affected commerce, remittances, and access to funds, especially in areas with limited banking infrastructure.
The restoration of mobile money services has brought relief to traders and consumers, many of whom had delayed transactions during the shutdown. Business activity has since shown signs of recovery as customers regain access to digital payments and financial services. Industry observers note that the return of mobile money is essential for stabilising economic activity following election-related disruptions.
General internet access has also been restored, although access to some online platforms remains subject to ongoing review. Authorities have urged the public to use digital services responsibly in the post-election period, adding that any remaining limitations will be assessed in line with prevailing security and public interest considerations.
Uganda is among the leading countries in mobile money adoption in Africa, with millions of users depending on the service for retail payments, utility bills, salary disbursements, and domestic remittances. The full resumption of mobile money services is therefore viewed as a key step toward economic normalisation after the elections.
As the country transitions into the post-election phase, attention remains focused on the continued restoration of digital services and the broader recovery of economic activity across sectors reliant on mobile financial platforms.
