Kampala Capital City Authority (Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)) has launched the My Green Action Campaign at Kitante Hill School in Kampala on June 19, calling for stronger collaboration between citizens, schools, and the private sector to protect the environment.

The initiative is being implemented by Solutions For People (S4P) in partnership with UNICEF Uganda, Roofings Limited, Volcano Energy, and KCCA. It seeks to empower students in 10 schools across Kampala and Wakiso districts to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.

Speaking at the launch, KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Kigenyi emphasized that environmental protection is central to the authority’s mission, particularly in addressing pollution challenges in the city.

He said: "This campaign is very central for you and me and for what KCCA stands for," Kigenyi said. "There are many issues in the city, but one of the least talked about is pollution, especially air pollution."

He further highlighted KCCA’s Climate Change Action Strategy, which targets a 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 through initiatives such as electric buses, expansion of non-motorized transport systems, and implementation of the Kampala Urban Forest Management Plan.

Kigenyi also stressed the importance of partnerships in achieving environmental goals, saying: "KCCA is committed to improving the environment and quality of life. This is something we must do together because KCCA alone would fail if we don't have anchors and partners," he said.

He noted ongoing efforts to preserve green spaces such as Centenary Park and Kamwokya Children’s Park, and revealed that Kampala currently has about 160,000 urban trees.

Ugandan musician Bebe Cool also addressed the event, urging schools and households to reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal.

He said: "Saving the climate and environment of Uganda starts with us," Bebe Cool said. "Schools are still using firewood and charcoal, and we also use these fuels at home. The rate at which trees are being cut down is worrying. Let us conserve our environment and support schools to transition to green energy."

The My Green Action Campaign will engage students in environmental activities designed to build long-term awareness and inspire youth participation in climate action across Uganda.
