The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA Uganda) has revealed that millions of newly printed National ID cards remain uncollected across the country.
According to NIRA, out of more than 7 million new printed National ID cards in Uganda, only 1.5 million have so far been picked up by applicants, leaving over 5.5 million cards still pending collection in district offices.
In a statement issued through its official communication channels, NIRA urged Ugandans who applied for new IDs or replacements to visit their respective district offices and pick up their cards.
“Our offices are open in all districts nationwide. While we continue printing and dispatching cards, we encourage applicants to visit respective district offices to pick their cards,” NIRA said.
NIRA Offices Open Across All Districts
The authority said its offices are operational countrywide, making it easier for applicants to collect their National IDs without delay.
NIRA also noted that printing and dispatching of additional National ID cards is still ongoing.
NIRA Improves Feedback and Communication Platforms
Following public concerns about delays and limited updates, NIRA said it is improving its feedback platforms to provide more accurate communication to applicants.
The new system will offer precise notices on application updates, including when an ID is ready and the exact location where it can be collected.
“Based on feedback gathered, we’re improving our feedback platforms to give precise notice of application updates, including readiness and pickup places,” the authority stated.
How to Check National ID Status in Uganda
To help applicants track the status of their applications, NIRA advised Ugandans to use its official contact channels.
Applicants can share their application ID via WhatsApp on 0766 501071 to receive a status update.
Alternatively, Ugandans can call NIRA’s toll-free line 0800211700 for inquiries.
The National ID remains a key document in Uganda, required for accessing essential services such as banking, employment, government programmes, and voter registration.
