
Parliament of Uganda has received the body of former Kalangala Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Helen Nakimuli, in an emotional ceremony marked by grief and tribute from Members of Parliament led by Speaker Anita Among.
Hon. Nakimuli died on Sunday following a surgical procedure according to reports.
The cortege carrying Nakimuli’s remains arrived at Parliament where MPs gathered at the South Parking area to receive the casket before it was taken to lie in state. The occasion drew lawmakers from different political affiliations who described her passing as a major loss to both Parliament and the country.
Speaker Anita Among led the parliamentary leadership in paying tribute to Nakimuli, describing her as a valued colleague whose service to Parliament and her community left a lasting impact. She extended condolences to Nakimuli’s family, residents of Kalangala, her political party the National Unity Platform (NUP), and all those she worked with during her career.
Parliament also highlighted Nakimuli’s strong involvement in sports, where she actively participated in netball and basketball. She was notably the captain of the parliamentary volleyball team, leading them to consecutive championship victories at the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games, earning her respect among fellow legislators and athletes.
Members of the parliamentary sports fraternity also paid tribute, remembering her leadership, teamwork, and dedication both in sports and public service. Her colleagues described her as energetic, committed, and a unifying figure within Parliament’s sports community.
A special parliamentary session is being held in her honour, allowing MPs to formally celebrate her life and contributions.
Nakimuli’s passing has left a deep sense of loss within Parliament and the broader political and sports community, as leaders continue to reflect on her legacy of service, leadership, and athletic excellence.
