
Uganda has officially sworn in newly appointed members of the Tax Appeals Tribunal, marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to strengthen its tax administration and dispute resolution framework. The appointments are seen as a strategic step toward improving fairness, transparency, and efficiency in the handling of tax-related disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
The newly appointed members include Mr Bagamuhunda Kenneth Apollo, Ms Rebecca Nassimbwa Nsumba, Mr Edward Biryetega, and Mr Agaba Gerald Kakima. Their appointments were made in accordance with the relevant legal provisions governing the Tribunal, reinforcing the government’s commitment to upholding lawful and structured institutional processes.
The Tax Appeals Tribunal plays a crucial role in Uganda’s governance and economic environment by ensuring that tax disputes are resolved in a fair, timely, and transparent manner. This function is vital in strengthening trust between taxpayers and government institutions, while also contributing to a more predictable and stable business environment that supports investment and economic growth.
The swearing-in ceremony reflects the government’s continued focus on building strong, credible institutions that uphold the rule of law while facilitating national development. By reinforcing the Tribunal’s capacity, authorities aim to enhance confidence in Uganda’s tax system and ensure that disputes are handled with consistency and legal precision.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire commended the leadership of the Tax Appeals Tribunal for the progress achieved over the past two years. He described the institution as one of the most effective tribunals in the country, noting its growing reputation for professionalism and efficiency in handling tax matters.
Justice Kiryabwire further emphasized the importance of the Tribunal’s strong working relationship with the courts, stating that this collaboration has been instrumental in promoting the consistent interpretation and application of tax law. According to him, such cooperation is essential in ensuring that tax justice is delivered in a manner that is both predictable and legally sound.
He also underscored that tax administration must remain fair, transparent, and firmly grounded in the law. He urged the newly appointed members to carry out their duties with integrity, wisdom, and sound judgment, noting that their decisions will play a key role in strengthening public trust and enhancing justice within Uganda’s tax system.
The appointment and swearing-in of the new Tribunal members is expected to further reinforce Uganda’s institutional capacity in tax dispute resolution, contributing to improved governance, investor confidence, and long-term economic stability.
