Senior Presidential Advisor and Office of the National Chairman (ONC) Manager Hajjat Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye has ordered fresh leadership elections at Iganga Central Market following a prolonged leadership dispute linked to the management of a SACCO loan scheme.
The directive was issued during a meeting at Iganga Municipal Council attended by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), the Mayor, the District Police Commander (DPC), district NRM leaders, and market vendors.
According to the meeting, the dispute arose after traders alleged that their SACCO contributions were mismanaged and that the expected development loans were not delivered, sparking dissatisfaction among vendors.
Hajjat Namyalo said the current market administration should be dissolved and directed that new leadership elections be conducted within two weeks under the supervision of the RDC and the Mayor.
She also directed that outgoing administrative members should not contest in the upcoming elections, saying the move was intended to restore confidence in the market's leadership through transparency, accountability, and integrity.
During the meeting, Iganga Municipality Mayor Kongola Nasser commended Hajjat Namyalo for extending ONC empowerment programmes to Ugandans regardless of political affiliation. He also requested her support in lobbying for the establishment of a government seed secondary school in the municipality.
Hajjat Namyalo further urged local leaders to ensure that government wealth-creation programmes, including the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, benefit their intended recipients. She emphasized that accountable grassroots leadership is essential for improving household incomes and community development.
Market vendors welcomed the intervention and expressed appreciation to Hajjat Namyalo and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, saying they hoped the planned elections would help restore transparency and stability in the administration of Iganga Central Market.
