President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has begun a two-day working visit to the United Republic of Tanzania aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening the long-standing relationship between Uganda and Tanzania.

President Museveni arrived in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, following an invitation from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. He was received at Julius Nyerere International Airport by Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Uganda’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Col. Fred Mwesigye, and other senior government officials.

The Ugandan President was accorded a guard of honour and welcomed with a cultural performance before proceeding to his official residence.

During the visit, President Museveni and President Samia Suluhu Hassan are expected to hold bilateral discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. Key areas on the agenda include trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, transport, tourism, defence and security, as well as regional integration through the East African Community (EAC).

The two leaders are also expected to review progress on strategic joint initiatives, including the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), along with other cross-border energy and logistics projects aimed at improving economic cooperation between Uganda and Tanzania.

The visit is expected to conclude with the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), including agreements designed to enhance collaboration in the energy sector.

This is President Museveni’s second visit to Tanzania in 2026, following his February engagement, and highlights the continued commitment by both countries to maintaining their historical and strategic partnership.

The visit builds on previous Uganda-Tanzania bilateral engagements, including the Fifth Session of the Tanzania–Uganda Joint Permanent Commission, as both countries continue working toward regional integration, sustainable development and economic growth.

President Museveni said Uganda and Tanzania’s relationship is built on common history, Pan-African ideals and a shared commitment to regional integration.

He added that he looked forward to productive engagements that would further strengthen cooperation for the prosperity of both countries and the wider East African region.
