Wazalendo SACCO has been recognised among Africa’s top 20 Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs) by total assets and membership, marking a significant milestone for Uganda’s cooperative financial sector.

The recognition was announced in connection with the 2026 Savings and Credit Cooperative Associations (SACCA) Congress, held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from October 10 to 16, according to the source report. The continental ranking was attributed to the African Confederation of Cooperative Savings and Credit Associations (ACCOSCA).

With reported total assets of approximately UGX 1.4 trillion, Wazalendo SACCO continues to strengthen its financial capacity to mobilise members’ savings, provide credit and support members’ financial well-being.

The SACCA Congress brings together leaders and stakeholders in Africa’s cooperative financial sector to exchange experiences, share best practices and explore innovative approaches to improving the performance and sustainability of SACCOs.

Wazalendo SACCO Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, said participation in the congress provides an opportunity for the institution to benchmark its performance against leading cooperative financial organisations and learn approaches that can strengthen governance and financial sustainability.

“Our participation in the 2026 SACCA Congress provides an important opportunity to benchmark Wazalendo SACCO against leading cooperative financial institutions, exchange experiences and learn best practices in governance, financial sustainability and member service. As a Board, we remain committed to providing strategic leadership that strengthens the SACCO’s growth, safeguards members’ savings and advances their financial well-being,” Lt Gen Kavuma said.

He emphasised that continuous learning and effective governance are essential to building institutional resilience and ensuring that the SACCO responds effectively to the changing financial needs of its members.

Wazalendo SACCO Chief Executive Officer Brigadier General Yusuf Magero Buha said the institution intends to turn the knowledge, experiences and partnerships gained at the congress into practical improvements in its operations.

He said the SACCO would focus on enhancing service delivery, promoting digital innovation and improving operational efficiency while maintaining sustainable growth.

“The SACCA Congress offers a valuable platform for learning, networking and exploring innovative approaches to delivering better financial services to our members. We are committed to translating the knowledge and partnerships gained from this engagement into practical improvements in service delivery, digital innovation and operational efficiency, while ensuring that Wazalendo SACCO continues to grow sustainably and meet the evolving needs of its membership,” Brig Gen Magero said.

He added that innovation, efficiency and member-centred services remain key priorities as the institution works to strengthen its operations and expand access to financial services.

The recognition highlights Wazalendo SACCO’s position in Africa’s cooperative financial landscape and reflects the contributions of its members, Board of Directors, management and staff to the institution’s growth.

As African SACCOs continue to explore better ways of delivering financial services, Wazalendo SACCO says it remains committed to strengthening its financial position, improving service delivery and promoting members’ welfare through responsible financial management and sustainable growth.
