Police in Kampala have arrested 14 suspects during an operation targeting the illegal siphoning and sale of fuel from motor vehicles in Kibuli, Makindye Division.
The suspects were arrested on Monday, during a search and cordon operation conducted by Kampala Metropolitan Police through Kabalagala Police Division in Kitoro and Agip Zones, Kibuli Parish.
The operation targeted individuals suspected of illegally extracting fuel from motor vehicles and selling it to motorists.
During the operation, police recovered 192 jerrycans containing suspected fuel residues, 16 containers of suspected fuel and 24 fuel-siphoning tubes. Officers also impounded two motorcycles and three motor vehicles believed to be connected to the suspected illegal activities.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the recovered exhibits and impounded vehicles were taken to Kabalagala Police Station to support ongoing investigations.
Police also collected samples of the suspected fuel for forensic analysis to establish its composition and determine whether it may have been contaminated.
The 14 suspects are being investigated for unlawful dealing in petroleum products as detectives continue examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged illegal fuel business.
The operation forms part of police efforts to address the suspected illegal extraction and distribution of petroleum products, which could pose risks to motorists and other members of the public.
ASP Owoyesigyire said investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as necessary.
