Makerere University Career Fair 2026 Highlights U.S. Study Opportunities for Ugandan Students
Ugandan students and recent graduates attending Day Two of the Makerere University Career Fair 2026, organized in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Uganda, received valuable guidance on pursuing higher education in the United States. The session offered insights into U.S. university applications, scholarships, internships, and career opportunities, equipping students with practical steps to advance their academic and professional goals.
Education experts highlighted the advantages of studying in the United States, including high-quality education, world-class faculty and facilities, research opportunities and internship & work programs such as CPT and OPT. Students were advised to focus on universities that provide strong research opportunities and modern facilities, while taking advantage of the flexibility to explore different majors during undergraduate study.
Participants were also guided through the five key steps to apply to U.S. universities, including researching suitable institutions, planning finances through scholarships and financial aid, completing applications with supporting documents such as transcripts and personal statements, applying for an F-1 student visa, and preparing for life on U.S. campuses, including cultural adaptation and networking opportunities. Starting early and staying organized was emphasized as essential for a smooth application process.
The session also pointed students to reliable resources, including EducationUSA, CollegeBoard, and FinAid, encouraging them to carefully plan applications, explore funding opportunities, and engage with program contacts. In addition to academic advice, the career fair provided a platform for students to connect with industry professionals, explore skills development workshops, scholarships, and training programs, and access pathways to employment and entrepreneurship. “Building strong professional networks while at university can open doors long after graduation”, Ezra On’rel Nuwenyine, an EducationUSA Adviser noted during the EducationUSA session.
