Government of Uganda officially commissioned major health infrastructure upgrade works in Hoima and Masindi districts as part of the country's preparations to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 tournament.

The commissioning was led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja and attended by several government leaders, including Minister of State for Education and Sports Peter Ogwang, Minister of State for Primary Healthcare Dr. Charles Ayume, Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs Grace Mary Mugasa, some members of Parliament and other leaders from the Bunyoro sub-region.

The projects involve the upgrade of Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Masindi General Hospital and Buseruka Health Centre III in Hoima District. Buseruka Health Centre III will be elevated to a Health Centre IV, while the two hospitals will undergo major infrastructural improvements.

According to Peter Ogwang, each of the three facilities will be equipped with an Accident and Emergency Unit, CT Scan and MRI Scan services, a theatre, an Out-Patient Department (OPD), and a general ward. The improvements are intended to strengthen healthcare service delivery as Uganda prepares to welcome teams, officials and visitors during AFCON 2027.

The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade has been tasked with implementing the projects and is expected to complete all works by December 31, 2026.

In addition to the health facility upgrades, government officials also commissioned construction works for training pitches in Hoima and Masindi, further boosting the region's readiness for the continental football tournament.

Speaking during the commissioning, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said the government is enhancing Uganda's healthcare system to respond to the medical needs associated with AFCON 2027. She also encouraged residents of Hoima and Masindi to take advantage of the opportunities expected to arise from hosting the tournament.

The latest developments form part of Uganda's broader preparations for AFCON 2027, with investments being directed toward infrastructure that will support both the tournament and long-term public service delivery in the host regions.
