Mawokota South Member of Parliament and former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Deputy President for Central Region, Yusuf Nsibambi, has officially crossed to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Nsibambi was on Wednesday, February 18, received at the NRM headquarters in Kampala, where he was introduced by the NRM First Vice Chairperson (Female) and Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.
Among confirmed that Nsibambi had made the decision to join the ruling party after observing its work and performance since he entered Parliament.
“I have brought Hon Nsibambi to join NRM. Today, February 18th he has joined NRM. He believes and has said he had known what NRM had done and that since joining parliament he has seen it and believes he wants to be in a team that delivers for this country,” Among said.
She added that the ruling party had gained a strong and capable figure.
“As a party we have got a knowledgeable and resourceful person in Nsibambi,” Among noted.
Dressed in NRM’s signature yellow colours, Nsibambi expressed readiness to serve under the ruling party and said he was prepared to take on any assignment.
“I am ready to join the struggle for peace. I am ready to be given any task to serve our people,” Nsibambi said.
His defection comes shortly after he led a group of opposition legislators to meet President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe last week, a meeting that triggered speculation and debate within political circles.
However, while appearing on a Television show, Nsibambi defended the engagement, saying many Ugandans wrongly assume that meeting the President automatically leads to personal financial gain.
“Many of those who are struggling are the ones who believe that meeting President Museveni means you will receive money. I am not in that category,” he said.
Nsibambi explained that his focus was on national issues, particularly the release of detainees held following election-related unrest.
“I’m glad President Museveni agreed to listen to our plea and to release prisoners including those who need rehabilitation,” he said.
He also revealed that his engagement with Museveni has not been a one-time event, stating that he has met the President several times.
“President Museveni is a leader chosen by the people. Last year, I met him three times,” Nsibambi added.
Nsibambi’s move is expected to intensify political discussions in Mawokota South and across the Central Region, especially as the ruling party continues attracting figures from opposition parties.
