
Starlink has officially launched its satellite internet service in Uganda, giving households, businesses and institutions a new option for high-speed internet connectivity.
The commercial launch marks the end of a lengthy regulatory process that saw the satellite internet provider, operated by SpaceX, secure approval to provide services in Uganda.
Starlink announced that its high-speed, low-latency internet service is now available in Uganda, while reporting confirmed that customers can order Starlink equipment and subscriptions through the company's Uganda service portal.
The arrival of Starlink gives Ugandan consumers access to internet connectivity delivered through satellites in low Earth orbit rather than through conventional fibre-optic cables or mobile towers.
The technology could be particularly useful in areas where fibre infrastructure is limited or where mobile broadband coverage is unreliable.
Unlike traditional fixed broadband, Starlink does not require a fibre connection to be extended directly to a customer's property. Users install a Starlink terminal that communicates with the company's satellite network.
That makes the service potentially important for rural communities, schools, health facilities, businesses and other organisations operating away from established telecommunications infrastructure.
Launch-day pricing shows that Starlink is entering the Ugandan market at a relatively high upfront cost.
Starlink's Uganda ordering information put the Residential 100 Mbps plan at UGX 203,704 per month. A higher residential option has been reported at approximately UGX 285,185 per month.
Customers must also purchase Starlink hardware.
The Standard Kit is listed at UGX 1,743,778, while additional charges include a UGX 437,036 regulatory fee and UGX 115,741 for shipping and handling.
Starlink's ordering information indicates that the regulatory charge includes a mandatory US$100 fee plus VAT for each kit connected in Uganda. Customers are directed to the Uganda Communications Commission for information concerning the regulatory charge.
Prices can change, so prospective customers should confirm the final amount displayed on Starlink's ordering page before making a purchase.
Starlink's biggest opportunity in Uganda may not necessarily be in Kampala, where consumers already have access to fibre and 4G and 5G broadband options.
Its satellite-based model could make a bigger difference in locations where laying fibre or building additional terrestrial infrastructure is expensive or difficult.
For a rural business, school, health centre, lodge or household, the ability to establish an internet connection without waiting for a fibre network to reach the area could be significant.
The technology could also give businesses operating in remote locations another way to maintain connectivity for digital payments, cloud services, communication, online bookings and other internet-dependent operations.
Starlink's launch follows a major regulatory development in May 2026.
The Uganda Communications Commission and Starlink signed an operational licence agreement in May, formally clearing the way for the company to establish its services in the Ugandan market. President Yoweri Museveni witnessed the agreement at State House in Entebbe.
The agreement came after months of uncertainty.
In January 2026, UCC had warned that Starlink had not yet received authorization to provide direct-to-consumer services in Uganda. The regulator also cautioned against the unauthorized importation, sale, installation and use of Starlink equipment in the country.
By May, however, the regulatory position had changed, with Starlink receiving the necessary approval to operate.
UCC has also addressed questions surrounding taxation, data sovereignty and regulation following the licensing agreement.
Although Starlink brings a different technology to the market, it is entering an already competitive Ugandan broadband sector.
Existing providers offer fibre and mobile broadband packages, particularly in urban areas. Local comparisons published following Starlink's launch show that some conventional broadband packages can be cheaper than Starlink's residential service.
This means Starlink's success in Uganda may depend less on replacing fibre in areas where fibre is readily available and more on serving customers who have limited alternatives.
The upfront equipment cost could also slow adoption among price-sensitive households.
At roughly UGX 2.3 million for the Standard Kit before the monthly subscription, the initial investment is considerably higher than what many consumers pay to obtain conventional home internet services.
For consumers, Starlink provides another broadband option and introduces satellite internet as a legal, commercially available service in Uganda.
Its strongest selling point is reach.
A customer does not need to wait for a fibre cable to be installed in their neighbourhood if Starlink coverage and the required equipment are available at their location.
However, customers should consider the total cost rather than looking only at advertised internet speeds.
For someone already connected to reliable fibre at a competitive price, switching to Starlink may not offer an obvious financial advantage.
For someone living or operating in an area without dependable fibre or mobile broadband, the calculation could be very different.
Starlink's entry is likely to increase competition in Uganda's internet market and could put additional pressure on existing providers to improve coverage, reliability and pricing.
The immediate question will be whether the service can achieve significant adoption despite its equipment cost.
The other important test will be real-world performance across different parts of the country, particularly outside major urban centres.
For now, the major development is clear: Starlink is officially live in Uganda as of September 2, 2026, transforming satellite internet from a heavily regulated and largely unavailable option into a commercial broadband service for Ugandan customers.
The service's long-term impact will depend on pricing, network performance, customer uptake and how effectively it reaches parts of Uganda that remain underserved by conventional internet infrastructure.
