Uganda’s aviation industry is entering a new era of growth as Uganda Airlines expands its fleet and Entebbe International Airport prepares to open a state-of-the-art passenger terminal in January 2026.

The national carrier, relaunched in 2019, announced plans to increase its crew and acquire additional aircraft, including repairing a plane currently grounded in Lagos, Nigeria. Board Chairperson Priscilla Mirembe Serukka explained that these measures aim to reduce flight delays and improve operational reliability, especially on international routes such as London.

“Flight delays and cancellations inconvenience passengers and increase operational costs, highlighting the urgent need for reforms to improve efficiency,” Serukka said. Uganda Airlines currently operates six aircraft, including two Airbus and four CRJ planes, one of which is grounded, limiting operational flexibility.

The airline’s expansion coincides with major infrastructure upgrades by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA). The new 20,000-square-metre terminal at Entebbe will increase passenger capacity from two million to 3.5 million annually and features three additional aerobridges, 24 new check-in counters, and 14 self-check-in stations.

UCAA Director General Fred Bamwesigye attributed record-breaking passenger traffic to Uganda Airlines’ expanded international flights, tourism promotion, and the return of major events. “Overall air traffic has grown due to the commencement of Uganda Airlines flights to London Gatwick, Harare and Kinshasa, the entry of new operators into Ugandan airspace, sustained tourism promotion, and the resumption of major international events,” he said.

With cargo traffic remaining strong, ongoing airport upgrades, and plans to enhance upcountry airports ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Uganda’s aviation sector is positioning itself for sustained growth. State Minister for Works and Transport Fred Byamukama urged service providers to ensure that services match the improved infrastructure.

The combination of Uganda Airlines’ operational improvements and strategic airport developments underscores a coordinated effort to enhance service reliability, boost tourism, and strengthen Uganda’s position as a regional aviation hub.
