Uganda has taken another step in strengthening its tourism and investment relations with China following the successful Pearl of Africa: Uganda–Hangzhou Tourism & Investment Conference held in Hangzhou.
Organized by the Embassy of Uganda in Beijing, the conference brought together government officials, investors, tourism stakeholders and business leaders to explore opportunities for cooperation in tourism, trade and investment.
The conference was officially opened by Uganda's Ambassador to China, Oliver Wonekha, and Lu Jun, Deputy District Chief of Xihu District in Hangzhou. The two leaders emphasized the importance of expanding Uganda-China cooperation at the subnational level, particularly in tourism, innovation and cultural exchange.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Wonekha reaffirmed Uganda's commitment to building sustainable tourism partnerships and attracting quality investments that support the country's development goals.
A major highlight of the conference was an Invest in Uganda presentation delivered by Richard Kabonero from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He showcased investment opportunities across key sectors including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, mineral development, renewable energy, infrastructure and information and communications technology (ICT).
Kabonero highlighted Uganda's strategic location in East Africa, youthful population and improving business environment as key advantages for potential investors.
The conference concluded with the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Ugandan and Hangzhou-based partners. The agreements focus on hotel development, tour operations, technology cooperation and tourism promotion.
The new partnerships are expected to increase tourism flows, strengthen business linkages and support the development of modern tourism infrastructure in Uganda while further deepening the long-standing friendship between Uganda and China.
